Rae Kwong Chung Center for New Climate Economics opened at the university

On October 31, 2022, a meeting was held at the M.Auezov South Kazakhstan University with the Nobel Prize winner, member of the International Committee for the Global Energy Prize, member of the board of the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Brighter Future, Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on climate change, honorary guest of the Nobel Fest-2022 forum with Professor Rae Kwong Chung.

During this meeting, the Rae Kwong Chung Center for New Climate Economics was opened at the university. The decision to open this center was carried out within the framework of a signed memorandum between the Chairman of the Board, Rector of  NJSC "South Kazakhstan University named after M.Auezov named after M. Auezov Kozhamzharova Kozhamzharova and Nobel Prize winner, Advisor to the UN Secretary General on climate change, Professor Rae Kwong Chung during holding the 5th Nobel Festival. In the future, innovative educational programs will be developed in the new center, and relevant research work will be carried out.

In her opening speech, the Chairman of the Board - Rector of NJSC "South Kazakhstan University named after M. Auezov" D.P. Kozhamzharova, having expressed her best wishes to the guest, announced that this center is aimed at introducing a new model of economic sustainable development, green technologies and reducing the impact of climate change on agriculture, and also spoke about the great potential of the new center to influence the socio-economic development of the South Kazakhstan region.

Shyngys Mukan, deputy akim of the city, who was present at the meeting, noted that the climate of Shymkent has undergone significant changes in recent years and the problems that arise in this area can only be solved by the joint efforts of scientists based on a scientific approach.

Also, according to the program of the event, Professor Rae Kwong Chung held a guest lecture for students and faculty of the university. During the lecture, students and faculty of the university had the opportunity to get answers to their questions. By mutual agreement, Professor Chung will give regular lectures to university students during the academic year.

At the end of the event, the Chairman of the Board, Rector Kozhamzharova Dariya Perneshovna, in accordance with the decision of the Academic Council of the SKU named after M. Auezov, presented Professor Rae Kwong Chung with a diploma of “Honorary Professor of the South Kazakhstan University named after M. Auezov”.

        The goals of the Center staff

Rae Kwong Chung Center for New Climate Economics (Center) to introduce a new model of economic development based on the principles of sustainable growth, green technologies and reducing the impact of climate change on the environment. Work in the center: Chairman - Rae Kwon Chung. Director of the Center -  Shingisbayeva Zhadra Atirkhankyzy.

     The main goals of the Center staff are:

  • Development of a program for the New Climate Economy of the Central Asian countries, interaction with governments, international organizations and business entities to implement the principles of the climate economy and sustainable development goals;
  • Readiness of the Center for collaborations, including focus on cooperation with enterprises of the real sector of the economy, research institutes of the Republic of Kazakhstan, other scientific organizations and research and development centers, universities and organizations of other levels of education, including those located outside the region;
  • Initiating, conducting and disseminating research results on the New Climate Economy (NCE) and sustainable development;
  • Development of innovative educational programs of different levels in the relevant areas of training;
  • Attracting grant funding to the Center, including from international and foreign organizations;
  • Development of new educational materials and manuals on the basis of ongoing research work for master's and PhD programs of the Center;
  • Preparation of a ready-made online semester course on the new climate economy for the Master's and PhD programs of the Center on the Nobel Fest educational platform;
  • Assistance in the exchange of experience, information, educational and scientific literature in various fields, including sustainable growth, green technologies, food security and climate change;
  • Assistance in advising and co-managing the work of undergraduates and PhD doctoral students; • Carrying out joint research and development in the field of sustainable development;
  • Preparation and publication of joint research and development (monographs, scientific publications in high-ranking journals, etc.) in the field of sustainable development;
  • Joint holding of scientific conferences, symposia, round tables in areas of mutual interest.
Events
International Forum "Green Economy - the Main Trend of the New Decade"

     On December 10, 2022 at 11.00 at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, as part of the International Conference "Industrial Technologies and Engineering" - ICITE-2022, the International Forum "Green Economy - the Main Trend of the New Decade" was held, dedicated to the opening of the Center for a New Climate Economy and sustainable development named after Rae Kwon Chung. The work of the forum was carried out in accordance with the concept of the transition of the Republic of Kazakhstan to a green economy.
     The main goal of the Forum is to establish relations in the field of education and science, discuss topical applied and theoretical problems in the field of "green" economy, in the areas of development of green transport, green economy in the water sector, agriculture; energy security in Central Asia, the development of common positions to promote sustainable economic development in Kazakhstan and in the world. Within the framework of the International Forum "Green Economy - the Main Trend of the New Decade", the experience of participating countries (Norway, Uzbekistan, Poland, Japan, Croatia, Kazakhstan) was presented in promoting green transport, green economy as a paradigm for sustainable development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, green electrochemical technology, microcapsules as new types of fertilizers. Also, taking into account the proposals submitted by the forum participants and stakeholders, the main recommendations for joint regional cooperation for the sustainable development of the countries of the world were identified. Scientists from universities and research institutes, representatives of industries of the Republic of Kazakhstan and foreign countries with significant results of scientific research were invited to participate in the Forum. At the panel discussion of the forum, presentations were made by such prominent scientists as Stefan Dyrka, Professor, Doctor of Economics, Upper Sleses University, Katowice (Poland), Mavluda Irisbekova, Professor, Doctor of Economics, Tashkent State Transport University (Republic of Uzbekistan), Akhmetov Almaz -PhD, technical adviser to Orizon Consulting (Japan), Zhekeyev Malik - Professor of the Department of Ecology of Yu. M. Auezova, Harsha Ratnavira - Professor of Water Supply and Sanitation Technology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (Norway), Marko Vincekovich - Professor of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Zagreb (Croatia), Iztleuov Gani - Professor of the Department of Ecology of the Yu. M. Auezov. At the end of the program, a forum resolution was prepared.
